This week’s Talk Ten Tuesday podcast featured AAPC’s Brian D. Murphy, CPC, who spoke about the importance of clinical documentation improvement (CDI). Mr. Murphy is the Director of the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (ACDIS), and he spread the word about the third annual CDI week, September 16-20, 2013. As noted in the podcast, CDI is becoming more nationally recognized as an essential part of any medical facility, especially with ICD-10 implementation on the horizon.

Mr. Murphy also expounded on an industry survey ACDIS recently conducted about CDI and ICD-10. Of the roughly 400 respondents, 50 percent said they had already begun formal ICD-10 training, and 46 percent said they planned to train their physicians in ICD-10 documentation by the end of 2013. The survey noted the top three most effective strategies for ensuring physician participation and collaboration as one-on-one conversations, educational presentations conducted in medical staff meetings, and directives from hospital administration.
