Advance for Health Information Professionals: “Take 5 Minutes”

There simply are not enough hours in the day to get everything done. However, that doesn’t mean you don’t have time to work toward advancing your career. Advance for Health Information Professionals magazine spoke with HIM professionals and asked their advice on what other professionals can do with just five minutes to learn, grow and advance your careers.

    I have an Associate in Science degree (1980!) in what was formerly called Medical Record Science. I did not keep up my continuing education credits to maintain my ART (accredited record technician) status. I am considering working in the field again. I have worked in record analysis, coding, quality assurance (20 years ago!) – I think I would like to be involved in research studies. How can I re-enter the field?

    I am (was) an RRA from 1975(!!) never kept up my CE either. I am going back into the field at the ripe old age of 60. What is the difference between AHIMA and AAPC. It seems like there is overlap. I was a member of AMRA back then, and so now I realize AHIMA is the old AMRA…..

    but how does CCA compare with AAPC’s codes. It’s so confusing to me.

    In 1974, I completed a certificate program in Medical Record Science, I have no hours towards an Associate Degree. I did not keep up my continuing education credits to maintain my status as an ART (accredited record technician) in the AMRA.
    For the past 30+ years I have been self employed with my husband running our own businesses.
    I am interested in going back into the “Medical Information” field. Can you explain the difference between the AHIMA and the AAPC certifications? I am seeking information regarding the quickest and least expensive route to a Billing and Coding Certificate, and I see the AAPC offers dis. Is an associate degree required to obtain “Certified Professional Coder” status. I am only interested in online studies, at almost 55 years old, I don’t want to take the classroom approach.
    At this time, I think I want to work in a full service hospital/medical center setting instead of a physician’s office, can you explain the difference in the CPC Preparation Course (Physician-Based Coding) and the CPC-H Course? Will completion of your courses prepare me for a “Hopsital Job”?
