The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) guidelines require physician supervision over the technical portion of all diagnostic tests (including radiology services) provided to Medicare beneficiaries in a nonhospital setting. Services not meeting supervision requirements are deemed not “reasonable and necessary” for Medicare coverage. As such, a firm understanding of physician supervision requirements is essential.
