Two More Companies Dump Database

The list of insurers agreeing to stop using a popular “usual and customary” database and contribute to a new independent database to determine the rate they pay out-of-network doctors and hospitals continues to grow.
New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo announced in a March 5 press release that non-profit payers Capital District Physicians’ Health Plan, Inc. and Excellus Health Plan have agreed to no longer use the usual and customary database developed by UnitedHealth Group’s Ingenix subsidiary.
Like other companies that previously made agreements with Cuomo’s office, both will reimburse consumers charged over a six-year period.
The two join a number of payers who have dropped Ingenix’ database and are participating in an independent database being developed. They include WellPoint, Aetna, Cigna, and United HealthCare.
