IPPS 2010: Embolism, Thrombosis Codes Clarified

June 12th, 2009

An expansion of the 453.x (embolism and thrombosis) range should help you precisely select your ICD-9-CM codes in 2010.

New embolism and thrombosis codes in the hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) proposed rule for 2010 will offer options based on the location as well as the complexity.

Existing ICD-9-CM codes will be revised for 2010 to stay consistent with the acute versus chronic wording:

  • 453.40 — Acute venous embolism and thrombosis of unspecified deep vessels of lower extremity
  • 453.41 — Acute venous embolism and thrombosis of deep vessels of proximal lower extremity
  • 453.42 — Acute venous embolism and thrombosis of deep vessels of distal lower extremity

More good news: Payers may add covered diagnoses to their prothrombin time monitoring policies. Watch out for year-end policy updates.
