SSA and MedVirgina Demonstrate EHRs’ Value

A collaboration between the Social Security Administration (SSA) and MedVirginia—Virginia’s regional health information organization—is making a sound business case for health information technology (health IT) and the use of interoperable electronic health records (EHRs), maintains Jim Borland, special adviser for health care IT at Social Security.
The SSA and MedVirgina began exchanging data February 28 and, so far, they say it’s proving to be a “win-win” for everyone involved.
The SSA and its state agency partners report they are getting the information they need to process disability determinations in a more timely fashion; and health care providers are seeing a reduction of administrative costs and a potential reduction in uncompensated and charity care costs.
“Because we can make disability determinations faster, we can get our claimants access to Medicare and Medicaid health insurance faster, which reduces uncompensated care from a provider’s perspective,” Borland explained.
