Dr. Francis Collins, who most famously sat at the helm of the Human Genome Project, has been confirmed by the Senate to direct the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

Collins, both a physician and geneticist, directed the lab known most recently for discovering genes associated with type 2 diabetes. He and his staff also discovered the genes tied to other diseases and conditions, including cystic fibrosis and Huntington’s disease.

The NIH is a sister agency to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) and part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
