PWK Segment for X12N Version 5010 Postponed
July 15th, 2011
Implementation of the X12N version 5010 electronic claim transaction is still on track for Jan. 1, 2012, but the paperwork (PWK) segment of the new standard is not. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently informed Medicare contractors that it is delaying the PWK segment originally scheduled for implementation in July and October.
The PWK segment within the 837 professional and institutional transaction provides the linkage between electronic claims and additional documentation. This segment was supposed to be implemented July 5 for the Fiscal Intermediary Standard System (FISS), MultiCarrier System (MCS), and Common Working File (CWF); and Oct. 3 for the Viable Information Processing Systems (VIPS) Medicare System (VMS). A new implementation date had not been set at press time.
The PWK segment, when implemented, will initially only allow submission of additional documentation via mail or fax. Medicare contractors will be responsible for implementing the appropriate PWK fax/mail cover sheet, which must be used by providers when mailing or faxing additional documentation indicated in the PWK segment.
Revised MLN Matters MM7041 explains how providers should mail or fax additional documentation indicated in the PWK segment to Medicare contractors.
