The Health IT (HIT) Policy Committee has approved recommendations on the Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) proposed rule-making regarding the establishment of a permanent certification program for purposes of testing and certifying health information technology made by the Adoption-Certification Workgroup and the Privacy & Security Policy Workgroup. The HIT Policy Committee approved the recommendations during a May 6 teleconference call.

A recent Center for Information Technology Leadership (CITL) study comparing health information technology (IT) in the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to norms in the private sector concludes that the VA spent proportionately more on IT than the private health care sector spent between 1997 and 2007, but it achieved higher levels of IT adoption and quality of care.

The Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) has issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM) for the establishment of two certification programs—one temporary and one permanent—for the purposes of testing and certifying electronic health record (EHR) systems and other health information technology (HIT).

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced a proposed rule to implement provisions of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act) that provide incentive payments for the meaningful use of certified EHR technology.
