The Breast Cancer Patient Protection Act of 2009, which aims to expand coverage for certain breast cancer procedures, has yet to even make it out of committee, but WellPoint, Inc. says it will implement certain provisions of the bill regardless.

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, or health reform law, extends a number of provisions that expired Dec. 31, 2009. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released instructions to its contractors to implement three health reform law provisions that will have ambulance providers breathing a sigh of relief.

The controversy continues over the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) November 2009 recommendations for breast cancer screening. Senator David Vitter (R-La.) sent a letter, dated May 12, to U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius requesting all agencies under HHS cease all promotion of the “impugned” recommendations.
