President Obama: Settle Health Care Reform by October

President Barack Obama affirmed June 2 his continued support for a government-sponsored health insurance plan even though, he acknowledges, it may cause stalwart Republicans to put the brakes on his drive for health care reform legislation by October.

“I strongly believe that Americans should have the choice of a public health insurance option operating alongside private plans,” President Obama wrote in a letter to Senators Ted Kennedy and Max Baucus, the chairmen of the key committees in the Senate handling health care reform.

Trustees Paint a Bleak Picture for Medicare

To say the financial condition of the Social Security and Medicare programs remains challenging is an understatement, but one made none the less by the board of trustees in a summary of the 2009 Annual Reports, issued May 12.

“Today’s report should trouble anyone who is concerned about the future of Medicare and health care in America,” Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said in a joint statement regarding the Medicare trustee’s report issued the same day.

“This isn’t just another government report,” Sebelius said. “It’s a wake up call for everyone who is concerned about Medicare and the health of our economy.”

Stakeholders Plan to Reduce Health Care Spending

President Obama Proposes Imaging Preauthorization

Contraceptive Makers Get an Incentive to Lower Costs

President Approves Stem Cell Research

President Obama signed, March 9, an Executive Order entitled “Removing Barriers to Responsible Scientific Research Involving Human Stem Cells.”

The order grants the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Director of National Institutes of Health (NIH), permission to support and conduct “responsible, scientifically worthy” human stem cell research, including human embryonic stem cell research.

House Eliminates Medicare Trigger

The U.S. House of Representatives on Jan. 6 voted 242-181 in favor of the 111th Congress adopting the operating rules of the 110th Congress — with a few changes. In particular, the rules package (H Res 5) eliminates the Medicare “trigger” provision of the Medicare Prescription Drug, Improvement, and Modernization Act of 2003. The move frees President Obama from submitting a plan to contain Medicare costs.
