A number of community health centers nationwide will receive a combined total of $25.7 million in stimulus grants in 2010, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced Aug. 23.
“These grants could not be coming at a better time,” HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said. “With more than 14.5 million Americans out of work, and 47 million without health insurance, the health centers are seeing more patients now than ever before.” Read more »

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced, May 28, the release of $81.7 million to expand services offered at the nation’s health centers. On the same day—100 days after the signing of the Recovery Act—HHS also awarded $25.6 million in non-Recovery Act grants to expand medical capacity at 54 existing health centers, helping an additional 230,000 individuals in 25 states receive primary health care services, the agency said.

Articles published in the New England Journal of Medicine’s April issue present a bleaker picture for the $19 million, multi-year electronic health record (EHR) initiative included in the Stimulus Package adopted last month.
The papers point to greater obstacles—practical and financial—than previously thought.

President Obama is pulling his health care team together.
Monday, he nominated Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius as his choice for secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) Monday. As secretary of HHS, Sebelius would oversee a department of 65,000 employees with a budget of more than $700 billion. Sebelius is currently in her second term as govenor of Kansas, where she served as state insurance commissioner for eight years and oversaw the state’s Medicaid program. Read more »
