Robotic Surgery: Standard Coding Describes High Tech Approach

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first fully-robotic surgery device, the da Vinci® surgical system, in early 2000. In recent years, robotic surgery—technically called laparoscopic robotic-assisted surgery—has revolutionized minimally invasive surgery (MIS).

Robotic-assistance has been adopted by several surgical specialties for complex procedures, such as mitral valve repair, Roux-en-Y, prostectomy, hysterectomy, sacral colpopexies, coronary anastomosis, nephrectomy, and others.

CMS Announces Decision for Bariatric Surgery Coverage

There is not enough evidence to support bariatric surgery in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and a body-mass index (BMI) less than 35 as reasonable and necessary, concluded the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in a Feb. 12 decision memo for surgery for diabetes (CAG-00379N).

CMS Proposes to Limit Bariatric Surgery Coverage

In a proposed decision memo, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) states that there is little evidence to support open and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding, or open and laparoscopic biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch as reasonable and necessary in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and a body-mass index (BMI) less than 35.
